Environmentalists have already sued the U.S. Navy to block its plans to create a sonar testing range nearby. A decision in that case is expected soon.

“This is a lot more intrusive than Navy sonar,” said Richard Charter, a senior fellow of the Ocean Foundation. “It’s louder and longer. And Navy sonar doesn’t lead to oil spills down the road.”

The National Resources Defense Council, in a report titled “Boom, Baby, Boom,” emphasizes that the ocean is an acoustic world and recommends that airguns, such as those that would be used for oil exploration, be kept out of sensitive areas and that greener alternatives be developed.
